What is Drofty?
Drofty.com is a literary portal where you can read short, one-minute writings inspired by images generated specifically by AI. The writing can be a short story, poem, fairy tale, few lines of dialogue, or even a haiku; the main point is that it is short, human-created, and accompanied by an image generated by artificial intelligence. Thanks to AI assistance, the writings can also be read in six languages (English, Hungarian, German, Italian, Spanish, French).
Why is it good to read Drofty?
Because the writings are short, diverse in genre and style, and can be quickly started and easily stopped, with smartphones required for access readily available in everyone’s pocket. As the site operators, we strive to make browsing Drofty as simple and comfortable as possible.
It’s an ideal activity for light reading on public transportation vehicles, especially when you’ve had enough of browsing news portal articles and don’t have the time or inclination to start a longer book.
Why is it good to write for Drofty?
Numerous writers have a collection of short texts hidden away in their files, which were born from an interesting thought, as a finger exercise, or from a momentary inspiration. Why not connect these short creations to an image from now on? Ideas can come anytime, in any situation, inspired by a thought, scent, event, or visual experience. We are confident that the AI-generated images will be excellent sources of inspiration, and the short stories will attract many readers. Being able to reach readers worldwide without language barriers as a writer with us, we believe, is a great opportunity. Give it a try!
Can I send an image to Drofty as well?
Of course. If you don’t want to try your hand at writing, but can generate great images with Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Dall-E, or any other image-generating algorithm, send them to us, and we will happily display them in the gallery. Be sure to send images that are somewhat inspiring, surreal, or thought-provoking, as this will increase the likelihood of writers using them in their creations.
What is the purpose of the Drofty project?
Artificial intelligence technologies are developing at an incredible pace, and it’s clear that they will soon play a significant role in our lives. Many people find their emergence frightening, but we would like to show how great creations can be born through collaboration with AI, and how it can help us as a tool to make those writings widely and globally accessible, which would have previously been very expensive and cumbersome to reach all the readers in the world.
Do I have to pay for using the site?
Currently, all services on drofty.com are free. Since the development and operation of the site cost money, we will inevitably need to find a solution for financing sooner or later. Several ideas have been raised, from a symbolic subscription fee to placing advertisements, but whatever is introduced, we will first ask for the opinions of our readers and creators.
What do I get if I write for Drofty?
First and foremost, you get a platform for your work. Think about it: whatever you write here will be read instantly by people all around the world. Of course, we are also considering ways for writers to monetize their creations on the site. Several options are being developed, from sharing advertising revenue and Patreon-style support to web3 services. We will definitely consult with the Drofty writing community about these ideas and make decisions in agreement with them.
What about copyright?
The copyrights of writings uploaded to Drofty naturally belong to the writers. We only provide a platform for display; we do not ask for any exclusivity or relinquishment of any usage rights.
As for the uploaded images, there is currently no international regulation regarding the copyrights of images generated by algorithms. According to an official statement, content generated by algorithms is not human-made and therefore does not fall under copyright laws.
Based on this, AI-generated images uploaded to our gallery are currently freely usable, provided they are indeed created by algorithms and the uploader is convinced of this.
Of course, if there is any legislative regulation on this issue, the current operation of Drofty may change.
Why drofty.com?
When we thought about how interesting it would be to write stories for the abstract, often surreal images created by AI, we immediately thought of Philip K. Dick’s classic, the novella Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which served as the basis for the film Blade Runner. In the end, Drofty’s creators write about the dream of androids, or the electric sheep. Based on this, we named our portal Dream of the Electric Sheep and intended to use a simple abbreviation as the domain name.
Unfortunately, the DOTES.COM domain was not available, so we considered the DROFTHELSH.COM web address, which uses the first two letters of each word in the title, but it seemed more like the name of a Norwegian thrash metal band than a literary portal. Moreover, it was hard to remember and too long, not to mention how strange it would sound coming from our writers’ mouths when they draw attention to their latest creation being available on DROFTHELSH.
However, we really liked the first syllable: DROFT, and from there, it was just a step to the birth of the pleasantly sounding DROFTY, reminiscent of the English word “draft” (writer’s draft).
Is this the final version of Drofty?
Far from it. The current site is just the beginning. A much more user-friendly, functionally complex portal is under development, which, when completed, will automatically and comfortably meet the needs of both writers and readers. We will place special emphasis on involving reader and writer communities from all around the world.
